The massive explosion which shook the Lebanese capital recently and destroyed communities, left the country in the face of countless disasters across sectors. Apart from the devastating number of casualties and injuries, initial assessments indicate that 300,000 people, including 80,000 children, have been left homeless following the disaster. The blast caused massive destruction to thousands of health care centers, schools, residences, private, and public facilities in neighborhoods across the city. In recent months Lebanon has been struggling with an overwhelmed healthcare system enduring rising numbers of Covid-19 cases, inflation, an economic crisis, food insecurity and political unrest.

“What has hurt Beirut has hurt us all. Our brothers and sisters in Lebanon need us and we must do our best to fulfill our moral and humanitarian duty towards them. We know no other way but to stand firmly beside those who lost everything overnight – their loved ones, their homes, their livelihoods and their safety – to this shocking tragedy.”

Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi

Building on existing humanitarian response efforts, the ‘Salam Beirut’ campaign includes a 3 phase appeal that transitions from immediate humanitarian relief into rehabilitation, reconstruction and sustainable long term economic and social recovery. The first phase will prioritize shelter responses and protection. Activities in this phase include basic rapid rehabilitation of affected houses, the distribution of safe shelter materials to affected people, and basic protection activities such as counselling and psychosocial support to affected children, families, and individuals. The second and third phases will deliver recovery and reconstruction interventions to restore affected healthcare, education, and livelihoods infrastructures and facilities. Later activities within these phases will also prioritize longer term economic and social recovery efforts.
