Big Heart, HH Sheikha Jawaher touches 12,000 Syrian families in need by donating US$1.8 million as an Eid gift of hope

Ediyah alleviates the suffering of Syrian refugees in Jordan as harrowing death toll surpasses 100,000

UAE, Sharjah, X August 2013: With the Syrian conflict showing an insatiable appetite for human lives and the death toll now sky rocketing past 100,000, about 12,000 Syrian refugee families in Jordan have received a timely intervention of hope through a mammoth gift of US$1.8 million from Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, UNHCR Eminent Advocate for Refugee Children.

The donation is part of her ‘Big Heart’ campaign which is lessening the burden on the shoulders of almost 2 million refugees scattered by the political upheaval into neighboring countries like Lebanon and Turkey, with desperation forcing some as far as Libya.

Commenting on the refugees’ plight, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, UNHCR Eminent Advocate for Refugee Children explained: “In Ramadan, our holiest time of the year, it is extremely sad to think many Syrian refugees are spending Eid worrying about a roof over their head and food to feed their families, medicine for the sick & education for their children. This gift is a small way of showing refugees that they are not alone, because each day more donors are showing their big hearts. We will never let Syrian refugee mothers and children drown in their own tears.”

The donation will be shared among 12000 families who are living hand-to-mouth, with an average of six children per family. Children constitute half of the almost 2 million refugees trapped in the crossfire of the ever-deteriorating cataclysm, with human rights like education and medical attention now becoming a privilege.

Her Highness added: “What pains us most is that some young children have actually spent more time as refugees than in their own country. This is not their first Ramadan in such heartbreaking conditions, but God willing it will be their last as refugees and they will be able to return to their homes.”

Meanwhile the military deadlock in Syria means the daily flood of refugees spilling over across its borders is showing no signs of dying down – and if anything, could even rise above the current 8,000 new refugees per day.

Donors can make life-saving contributions to the ‘Big Heart for Syrian Refugee Children’ campaign. Funds are collected through ‘Salam YaSeghar’, endorsed by HH Sheikha Jawaher.
