A highly successful ‘Big Heart Marathon’ has been held in Al Thaidto benefit the ‘Big Heart for Syrian Refugee Children’ campaign. The campaign is spearheaded by Her Highness SheikhaJawaherBint Mohammed Al Qasimi, the UNHCR’s Eminent Advocate for Refugee Children.
The marathonattracted a massive turnout comprised not only of fitness enthusiasts, but also members of the public wishing to make a life-changing contribution to those affected by the deteriorating Syrian conflict.The crisis has forced over 1.6 million Syrians to flee their country and 7,000 new refugees per day cross into neighboring countries like Lebanon. Meanwhile a further 2 million Syrians have been internally displaced.
The marathon started at Al Khawater Bridge and culminated at Al Dhaid Cultural & Sports Club. It comes soon after a successful parade that was held in Sharjah to raise public awareness.
Noura Al Noman, Director of the Executive Office of HH SheikhaJawaher, commented: “We want to express our heartfelt appreciation to all those who came out in huge numbers to boost the campaign. Thisis a further signal that the UAE public is determined to turn words into actions and lead the humanitarian effort for our Syrian brothers and sisters. We are optimistic that this will be the first of many successful public activities for this crucial cause.”
